Event Description

🌅 Tennyson Down – A Breathtaking Coastal Ridge Walk

The Tennyson Down trail is one of the Isle of Wight’s most spectacular clifftop routes, stretching across the island’s western coastline. This uplifting walk offers sweeping views over the English Channel and leads toward the iconic Needles, making it one of the most memorable hikes in the region.

This classic 4‑mile circular route begins at the High Down car park and follows chalk cliffs rising up to 482 feet (147m). The walk typically takes 2 to 3 hours, with plenty of opportunities to pause, take in the scenery, and enjoy the refreshing sea breeze.

🌟 Highlights Along the Trail

  • Tennyson Monument A striking granite cross built in 1897 to honour Alfred, Lord Tennyson, the Poet Laureate who often walked these very downs for inspiration.
  • The Needles Landmark As we approach the western tip of the island, the trail reveals incredible views of the Needles lighthouse and the colourful sands of Alum Bay — one of the Isle of Wight’s most iconic sights.
  • St Agnes Church A charming thatched church built in 1908 on land donated by the Tennyson family. It’s the only thatched church on the island and a peaceful stop along the route.

Please note that it is more economical to take a car with 5 or more passengers using the White link ferry.
